Message from Head of School
In the increasingly fast paced and competitive global marketplace of the 21st century, marketing has an increasingly important role to play to assist companies (big and small, service and product, profit and not-for profit) to remain competitive. Marketing is typically seen as the task of creating, communicating and delivering goods and services that deliver value to consumers and businesses in both domestic and international markets. The marketing function is performed in all companies. So whatever your career goals, be it with a large multi-national company, working in a non-profit organisation or being self-employed, marketing skills and knowledge will be valued.
Today, all marketers have to think strategically as well as tactically. They must think globally as well as locally. They must be flexible and adaptable, but not lose sight of principles and practices that have stood the test of time. In this environment it is critical to invest in information gathering and the quest for knowledge. At the School of Marketing this quest is pursued with commitment and determination. It is evident in our world-class research output and in the calibre of our staff and our programs. We are also very proud of our graduates who have applied the knowledge gained at UNSW to management challenges in all sectors of business around the globe.
I encourage you to browse through our web site. I hope you find it a rich source of information. We have tried to be comprehensive, giving you a vivid picture our activities. You will find information about our undergraduate and graduate degrees in Marketing and in Tourism and Hospitality. There is a wealth of information about our research interests, publications, seminars and research degrees, as well as the Research Centre located within the School.

The full range of coursework degree programs is also available for those wishing to study Tourism and Hospitality. An acclaimed undergraduate degree in Tourism and Hospitality is offered by the School and this has gone from strength-to-strength since its inception almost 20 years ago.
Research priorities are more specialised than our teaching capabilities. Areas of particular research expertise within the School of Marketing include:
- Brand management
- Services marketing and service quality
- Relationship marketing and consumer loyalty
- Consumer decision process
- New product development processes

Typically, students who are undertaking research degrees - BCom (Honours), MPhil and PhD - work within one of these specialised areas. A formal program of research training is offered to those who have a distinguished academic record. Entry is very competitive and numbers are strictly limited. To date, 34 doctoral theses have been completed in the School, and some 22 are in progress.
Research activity is encouraged through formal research courses, a Working Paper Series, research grants, a seminar program and conference support. The Centre for Applied Marketing is located within the School.
Academic staff in the School publish in a wide range of international journals. Through these publications we reach out to managers and business people, students enrolled on our programs, and the international academic community. This dual publication policy is a sign of our commitment to academic rigour and practical relevance, and also reflects the tremendous wealth of business and professional experience of our 25 academic staff.
Throughout the web site we have striven to provide comprehensive information. As much as possible we have tried to anticipate your questions. If, however, you have further queries, thoughts and suggestions we would like to hear from you.
