School of Marketing - 40 Years of Achievement

In November 1963 the University Council approved the establishment of a Chair of Marketing within the University of New South Wales and in 1964 a Marketing Unit was set up located within the (then) Faculty of Commerce. The idea of establishing a School of Marketing was conceived and initiated by members of the business community. Two of the leading players involved were Mr Paul Fabricius (Marketing Director, Unilever) and Sir Peter Boon (Managing Director, Hoover). These two extremely energetic and far-sighted individuals secured the interest, cooperation and the promise of funding from a further forty-seven Sydney based firms. In early 1963 they approached the University of New South Wales with the novel request that it inaugurate a School of Marketing.

The archival notes from that period are most interesting. They indicate that few people within the University of New South Wales (at that time) had a very clear understanding of what a School of Marketing was or did and Fabricius and Boon had a difficult education task on their hands. However, their own marketing proved equal to the task. Towards the end of the year the idea of a School of Marketing was being regarded with favour by the University authorities, although the question of funding the new venture remained a primary concern. The forty-nine organisations involved gave a firm assurance that money would be provided. They subsequently funded a substantial part of the School’s expenses for the first five years of its existence, until student numbers built up to the point where the School became reasonably self-sufficient.

The rest is history. The first students to enrol in the School completed their studies in 1968 and graduated in 1969. Since then, the School of Marketing has become the most significant marketing educational establishment in Australia with a good international reputation for teaching and research. The School has graduated 26 PhDs with a further 20 in progress, and 8 Masters by Research. It has always maintained high standards of academic achievement and continues to attract the very best students from both the domestic and international communities.

Over the last thirty or so years more than 3,000 women and men have successfully completed doctorates, degrees, diplomas and certificates in the School. Graduates have every right to be proud of their lineage. They are members of a very special group.
