Larry Dwyer PhD is Qantas Professor of Tourism and Travel Economics at the University of New South Wales, Australia. A major purpose of the sponsored chair is to support research that improves our understanding of tourism economics and tourism policy to achieve benefits for Australia’s tourism industry and the wider economy. In funding the chair, Qantas has demonstrated a commitment to research to underpin the strategic management of Australia’s tourism industry to achieve competitive advantage internationally.
Larry publishes widely in the areas of tourism economics, management and policy, with 200 publications in international journals, government reports, chapters in books, and monographs. He has been awarded numerous research grants to contribute to tourism knowledge. Larry maintains strong links with the tourism industry at international, national, state and local levels. Larry also has undertaken an extensive number of consultancies for public and private sector tourism organisations within Australia, and for international agencies, including the World Tourism Organisation. Larry is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Business Enterprises for Sustainable Tourism Education Network (BESTEN). Larry is coordinator of the Sustainable Destinations research program of The Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre in Australia, and a member of the STCRC Centre for Tourism Economics and Policy which has recently developed Tourism Satellite Accounts for all Australian states and territories and is now involved in a study of climate change and tourism. He is an appointed member of the Standards of Excellence Assessment Panel of THE-ICE (International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education). Larry is Vice president of the International Association for Tourism Economics. In 2007, Larry was voted in to membership of the International Academy for Study of Tourism, the world’s peak academic tourism association and has now been voted in as its Second Vice President. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of sixteen international tourism journals.
